But there are many companies paying developers with much more limited experience and these companies pay the developer the same amount for his/her time whether is is productively producing working solutions or going around in circles trying to work out why the tools are not working as expected (whether a fault of the tools or of the user). Your experience allows you to solve issues without losing much time due to this experience and knowledge. You are a matured developer who have probably experienced several generation of tools. However I would expect that supported products have a better chance of not making problems since the supplier also has more incentive to ensure that things work well - due to the fact that they are backing it up with some form of committment (in what ever form that proves to be). If everything works there is obviously no need for support.

I did register for the evaluation version since we have some AVR32 projects using AVR32 studio as editor and programmer but debugging with the tool has proven to be too unreliable to be of much use. At the moment IAR possibly offers the best IDE for the AVR32 (without much competition but at quite a high price) and so a reasonably prices GCC based solution to fill the gap between AVR32 studio and the high end solutions is of interest for professional projects where the budget may be tighter. I am wondering whether anyone has any feedback about actually using the new Atollic offering?Įssentially I find it very positove that there is a supported version since this is something that professional developers need.
